We wanted to let you know that we have been in contact with UFCW 401 and we are pleased to announce that negotiations will commence on September 30, 2025. The Company has provided dates to the Union between September and February 2026 and the Union has accepted all of them. We are optimistic that negotiations will be productive and will result in the timely and successful renewal of the CBA.
As some of you may be aware, last week the Company communicated to the Union that, in accordance with the terms of the current collective agreements (Letter of Understanding #27 in the Retail and South Meats Agreements, Letter of Understanding #30 in the North Meats Agreement), the employer-funded Walking Steward program will conclude on August 10, 2025 — the day following the expiration of the existing agreement. This communication reflects the clear language of the agreement and has nothing to do with the merits of the Walking Steward program.
At this point the Union has not requested employees off on union business leaves or reallocated their own resources to act as Walking Stewards. UFCW 401 is able to do this, per the language in the collective agreement, if they would like to continue to have Walking Stewards.
Safeway has always respected the collective bargaining process. It is not uncommon for unions to file labour board complaints and grievances in the lead up to bargaining and we believe the current complaints filed by UFCW 401 are unfounded and baseless. As we approached negotiations, we expected this to happen, and we want to assure you that we remain focused on principled, fair and constructive bargaining. Our goal is to reach a balanced and competitive collective agreement that supports our employees, our customers, and the future of our business.
We are ready for open and respectful dialogue at the bargaining table when we commence talks in September. If you have questions, please speak with your Store Manager or reach out to Human Resources.
