Congratulations to our Safeway 2023 Scholarship Recipients

In 2010, we embarked on a journey to empower and support our student teammates across Canada in their pursuit of academic and professional aspirations. The Sobeys Inc. & Empire Scholarship program was established with a vision to foster growth, nurture talent, and provide invaluable support for our dedicated teammates on their educational journeys. Since its inception, this program has awarded numerous scholarships valued at $1,500 each, to deserving teammates, and this year is no exception.

Our selection process was exceptionally competitive this year, with our student teammates displaying talent, determination and ambition. Out of the outstanding pool of applicants, we’re thrilled to introduce the remarkable Safeway teammates who’ve been chosen as the recipients of the 2023 Sobeys Inc. & Empire Scholarships.

We would like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to this year’s recipients and our sincere thanks and best wishes to all applicants as they pursue their academic goals. Our scholarship program and application process can be found at: https://sobeyscareers.com/scholarship/

Applications are accepted from May 15 to June 15 each year.

We’re happy to share that our Alberta Safeway teammates and customers came together to raise more than $298,000. In total, more than $2.5 million was raised across all Sobeys Inc. banners.

Knowing the vital importance of early intervention mental health programming, you — our Alberta Safeway teammates — went above and beyond to encourage customers to donate. We’re extremely grateful for your efforts in making this exceptional achievement possible.

Family of Support remains a ground-breaking initiative, funding innovative mental health programs to ensure that children and youth receive the help they need early in life, setting the stage for brighter futures. These programs work to decrease stigma, strengthen families, and provide crucial support to more children and youth in need. Your contributions will continue to make a significant impact in the communities we serve over the coming year.

If you haven’t already, we encourage you to explore the stories of impact from our Family of Support patient ambassadors. These stories highlight the tangible difference your efforts are making in the lives of children and youth in need.

But remember, our journey doesn’t end here. Teammates can sign up for our Healthier Tomorrows Giving Program and make contributions directly from your paycheque to one of over 30 charities across Canada, including the 13 children’s hospital foundations we’ve passionately supported this past month.

Thank you once again for your incredible passion and dedication to this worthy cause!

Reaching a deal with UFCW 247

As you know, we reached a fully recommended tentative agreement with UFCW 247 last week. We now have agreements with both UFCW Locals and you will be able to get fully informed and participate in ratification processes this week.

The tentative agreements contain wage increases, more flexible scheduling options, voluntary severance offering, and a path to full-time for Grid B teammates who are building their careers in our stores and are a vital part of our future.

The time has now come for you to participate in a ratification vote on your respective tentative agreement. From October 18-20, your Union has asked you to cast your vote to ratify the new agreement.

It’s important that you exercise your right to be informed on all details and to participate in the ratification vote. This is a major decision and not one you should leave in the hands of others.

Please review the meeting notifications posted by the Union so you can be fully informed on the tentative agreement and to know where to vote.

If you require adjustments to your schedule so that you can attend a Union meeting or the ratification vote, please speak to your Store Manager and they will do their best to assist. In addition, if you don’t have access to a computer or mobile device that will allow you to participate in the Union’s meetings or online voting, please speak to your Store Manager about getting access to a Store Training Computer you can use.

Your vote matters! Exercise this right to make your voice heard.

Happy Thanksgiving, Safeway!

Seeing all of the incredible fall product and food displays in our stores, we know how hard you’re working to wow our customers and ensure they get everything they need to create their Thanksgiving dishes.

We want to take this moment to express our gratitude for all that you do each and every day for our customers, our communities, and one another.

We’re so thankful to have you on our team.

We hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving with the people in your life who matter most.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Reaching a deal with UFCW 1518

Since January, we’ve been at the table with UFCW 1518 and your bargaining committee, working collaboratively towards a fair, modern and competitive collective agreement for Safeway teammates in British Columbia.

We’re pleased to share that we’ve reached a tentative agreement that’s fully recommended by UFCW 1518 and your teammates on the bargaining committee. Given the significant time and effort invested by all involved, it’s good to know that this deal will be presented to all teammates with full support of the Union. We thank your teammates on the bargaining committee for making sure your voice was well heard and for their hard work as we focused on what we all needed in this collective agreement.

The Union will be sending information on meetings and the ratification vote schedule soon. We really encourage you to participate and to vote on this important agreement. Once ratified, we can move forward with implementation of this new, fair agreement.

Beyond this, we’re also looking forward to meeting with UFCW 247 and BCTGM 468 and their bargaining committees in the coming weeks. More details will follow.

Thank you again for your continued support throughout this process. We’re excited to continue growing as a team.

Bargaining update: Back to the table this fall

We get it. Bargaining has taken longer than any of the parties had hoped when we started earlier this year. We want you to know that we have returned to the bargaining table with UFCW 1518 to work together towards a fair collective agreement. Bargaining is complex and often takes longer than either side might predict. We’ll meet with UFCW 1518 in September, and UFCW 247 and BCTGM 468 in October.

We want you to know that we are committed to getting the right deal in our next set of bargaining dates with each of these Unions.

While we are committed to reaching agreements with all three Unions this fall – they must be the right agreements, with terms that meet our objectives to modernize the agreements and allow us to compete in this province. There’s a lot of hard work ahead of us, but we have no doubt that we can get it done together.

We have made a lot of progress in the talks already and we know we can finalize agreements with real improvements on many of our common goals.

Keep checking in with us for updates on SafewayTalks.ca.
